Careers Entitlement Statement
As a school we have a statutory and moral duty to provide students in Years 8 to 11 with careers education, information, advice and guidance. This is extended at Holy Family Catholic High School to include Year 7.
Guidance takes place within your normal subject lessons, during Personal Development lessons, during ‘drop down’ sessions and with one to one consultations with our independent careers adviser.
As a pupil at Holy Family you are entitled to a minimum of two consultations, with an independent careers adviser, during your five years at Holy Family. Your form tutor will let you know your appointment time for your consultation. If you would like an additional appointment with the careers adviser please speak to your Year Leader or Mr Devlin.
You are entitled to;
- clear advice and information about the options available, so that you understand what they involve. This includes KS4 and post-16 options
- support and guidance to help you make choices and complete a career plan for the future
- regular personal support and information on how well you are doing
- help to decide what to do when you leave Holy Family, including further learning, training and employment
- a programme of careers education helping you to develop the skills and knowledge to make choices and be successful in your transition to work and further learning
- the opportunity to be involved in making decisions about things that effect you learning
- opportunities to gain first hand experiences of local and regional post-16 providers
- an opportunity to learn about the world of work

Careers education is delivered through dedicated Personal Development lessons and in subject based lessons. Teachers and teaching assistants should take every opportunity to highlight careers links to the curriculum being taught.

Giving Careers Advice
All staff members may give pupils careers advice but this advice must be impartial.
Any staff that feel a pupil would benefit from an appointment with the independent careers adviser should see the Careers Leader.
Staff should be confident with a range of post-16 pathways in their own subject area. This should include academic qualifications, vocational qualifications and apprenticeships.
Personal Development
Personal Development lessons form an important part of our careers programme. They give an opportunity for pupils to focus on a particular aspect of their employability skills or develop a greater understanding of the possible pathways they can take as they progress through their education. These lessons are delivered by a dedicated team of staff and each year group has a particular focus.
Year 7 - Personal strengths and career planning
Year 8 – Labour Market Information, Qualifications and Pathways
Year 9 – Occupation Classifications & Combatting stereotyping
Year 10 - Emails Skills, T-Levels and Apprenticeships & Employment rights
Year 11 – Online image & Post 16 & Post 18 education/training
Drop-down sessions
Customised drop-down sessions are arranged throughout the year for different year groups or key pupil groups. These include sessions such as the careers fair, speed networking with employers and Diana Award mentoring sessions.
My Career Days
Once a term, a dedicated day is assigned as a ‘My Career’ Day and each lesson highlights how the content and/or skills developed in that session link directly to particular careers. Pupils are strongly encouraged to share what they have learnt with their parents/carers on these days.
Measuring Effectiveness and Feedback
We will know our careers provision is effective by having large numbers of pupils progressing to appropriate Further and Higher education and/or enrolling on apprenticeship or traineeship programmes. We aim to close the gap in positive destinations between pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds and others.
To do this we use data from North Yorkshire Local Authority to access how successfully our pupils have transitioned into the next stage of their education.
We will ultimately know that our careers provision is effective by having zero pupils classed as NEETs (Not in Education, Employment or Training) once they leave school after Year 11.
We also seek feedback from pupils, parents, post-16 providers and employers regarding our careers programme and welcome comments on how effective it is and how it could be improved.
