Eurofest 2016
20 Year 8 students participated in Eurofest, which is a languages competition for local schools, where stands must sell products (of their own making) to businesses. Students also must create a ‘Tourist Office’ and inform buyers of what there is in the local area and directions on how to get there. Students were then given an opportunity to experience more languages such as Russian, Swedish, Portuguese and Italian. We had a successful day, winning ‘Best Overall School’ and ‘Best Overall Tourist Stand’. The students should be very proud of themselves. Congratulations to all the students involved!
GCSE Badminton fixture V Snaith
A really enjoyable event was held at Snaith on Thursday 25 Feb, organised by Mrs Hunt and Mrs Willden from Snaith, but instigated by Yr 10 pupil Shona Kilgar. Eight couples played four matches each, with GCSE students upgrading their umpiring skills in the process.
The final score was 22 games to Carlton and 10 games to Snaith with Jess Trushell and Chloe Johnson as top scorers. It is hoped that a return fixture will be played over the next two weeks.
Carlton Incident
Dear Parent/Guardian
Most of you will be aware that an incident involving the police occurred this afternoon in Carlton village. School was initially informed of the incident from a local resident at approximately 1.30pm and, as a precautionary measure, all pupils were brought into the school building and the premises were secured. At this time we had no factual evidence regarding the incident, but all staff members were informed and asked to be vigilant. The decision was taken not to inform parents or pupils at this stage until advice had been received from the local police who had been contacted by school as soon as the incident was reported. Further information was received at 3.10pm from North Yorkshire Police who reported that there was no immediate risk but advised precautionary measures at the end of the school day. These included allowing pupils who travel on school buses to leave as normal, allowing pupils who come by car to be picked up, but asking pupils who live in Carlton to remain in school until a parent or guardian was able to collect them. We then informed all parents via our Groupcall message service of these measures and asked all parents who were collecting their children to do so from the main hall. At present, we are still unaware of the exact details of the incident. However, our main concern was and still is, the welfare of all the pupils in our care. We felt that the control measures put in place this afternoon ensured the wellbeing of all concerned. I would like to thank all staff, parents and pupils for their calm response throughout this difficult time.

My day with Pobble Creative Writing Workshop
On Monday 8th February, myself and three others- Kaitlyn Mills, Hollie Bristow and Alex Pickering (chosen because we are the most gifted and talented writers in Year 7) were lucky enough to go to a Creative Writing Workshop for Year 7 at Silcoates School, Wakefield.
When we arrived, we were shown into the huge library at Silcoates School. After arriving at the desks, three other schools came in one after the other. The room was finally full and Sue, the English teacher, explained to us the layout of the morning.

Exhibition: Germany’s Confrontation with the Holocaust in a Global Setting

It has been seen by approximately 30,000 people in the UK and South Africa, and has toured museums, libraries, galleries, universities and schools in the UK, South Africa, Ireland and the United States.
Good Shepherd Service
Students from years 7-9, who are making their confirmation in the local parishes were asked to represent Holy Family High School at the Good Shepherd Service. This took place at Leeds Cathedral on Friday 6th May. The service was to mark the charity work which students have taken part in during Lent this year. Funds raised will go to Leeds Catholic Care. Oliver, Jeff and Joe presented the cheque to Bishop Marcus on behalf of Holy Family high School. Bishop Marcus was keen to hear how the students had raised money for charity and spent time discussing fundraising ideas with the students.
Holocaust Memorial Day
Holocaust Memorial Day is marked each year on 27th January – the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration and death camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau. On and around this day, schools, communities and faith groups across the UK join together in national and local event to commemorate those people who became victims of the Nazis and their collaborators and of more recent genocides, and to consider the contemporary relevance of the Holocaust.
Year 7 retreat to Myddelton Grange
As part of Holy Family's ongoing commitment to the spiritual development of our pupils, 15 Year 7 pupils attended a retreat to Myddelton Grange in Ilkley from Monday to Wednesday this week.
It was my privilege, along with Miss Camy, Mrs Stevenson and Mrs Schofield to facilitate this retreat. With a combination of games, activities, discussion and prayer, we spent the time exploring the love God has for each one of us, and the call to share that love with those around us.
Each pupil gained much from the retreat. They were fully engaged, lively, inquisitive and respectful at all times.
KS3 Cross Country
Huge congratulations to the boy and girl runners at this years' York and District Cross Country event held at the Kavesmire York. 18 local Secondary Schools took part with over 500 runners.
Team success must go to the YR 7's girls who finished 5th overall with a special mention for Eva Abbott and Scarlet Oldfield who came 4th and 11th respectively. The two girls have been given a special invitation to train with the York and District cross country team; we wish them well.
International Women's Day
On Friday the 4th of March at lunchtime, we had a mass celebrating International Women's Day of Prayer and remembering those women who died for our faith. Members of the parish came to the mass including Margaret Littlewood, who was the president of the Catholic Women's League. After the mass, Beth Walker, and myself Aoifke McGuire France, had the opportunity to talk to her about her immense life filled with many amazing memories. It was lovely to talk to her and was very inspiring, especially as she showed us her medal awarded to her by Pope John Paul. Along with going to Washington to make a speech in front of the whole community of the League, she also donated £30000 to CAFOD as the League is a founder of CAFOD. We truly think she is an inspirational women and we are very thankful for being able to sit down and talk to her.
