PSHCE
PSHCE at Holy Family is underpinned by the Every Child Matters ethos.
Every Child Matters is based upon five outcomes identified as being the most important to children and young people:
• stay safe;
• enjoy and achieve;
• make a positive contribution;
• achieve economic well-being.
This in turn influences our aims for our students:
• To recognise their own worth;
• To work well with others;
• To develop positive relationships and respect for others;
• To understand our common humanity, diversity and differences;
• To know and understand what constitutes a healthy lifestyle;
• To develop safety awareness;
• To be positive and active members of a democratic society;
• To develop self-confidence and self-esteem, and make informed choices regarding personal and social choices;
• To form good relationships with other members of the school and the wider community.
We cover a range of topics during the year including:
Personal Development, Health & Emotional Well being, Careers & Guidance, Sex & Relationships Education, Personal Finance & Economic Well being alongside many aspects of citizenship.
All students have one lesson each week on a Tuesday morning, with their form tutor. This further strengthens the pastoral bond between tutee and form teacher.
We use a range of teaching and learning styles which include the children in activities such as discussions, role play, games, investigations and problem-solving activities. We encourage the children to take part in a range of practical activities that promote active citizenship (e.g. charity fundraising, the planning of school special events, or involvement in an activity to help other individuals or groups less fortunate than themselves.)
We organise classes in such a way that pupils are able to participate in discussion to resolve conflicts or behaviour. Students have opportunities to meet and work with members of the community such as: health workers; fire fighters; police and representatives from the local community, whom we invite into the school to talk about their role in creating a positive and supportive local ethos. There is an emphasis on active participation during learning, especially using group work and discussion techniques.
We have fantastic links with outside agencies which enhances our provision. The department works in close partnership with the Police, Health Service, NYBEP, Fire & Rescue, Connexions, the Prison Service as well as many more. Their dedication to the school is immensely appreciated and enjoyed by our students.
Access to careers advice is also available during a planned programme of interviews with local careers advisors who also run a weekly 'drop in' service as well as 'one to one' appointments.
Sex and relationship education is dealt with sensitively and in accordance to school policy and the Leeds Diocese. The school nurse delivers information on puberty, STI’s and a Well Woman clinic. A male member of the teaching staff talks to year 10 male students regarding Well Man. Cross curricular links with Science further supports our work while Religious Education looks at the emotional aspect of sex and relationship education.
Miss Green is the Head of department and if you require any further information then please contact the school.
