English

The English Department aims to enable students to communicate clearly and accurately, both verbally and in writing.  We wish to encourage a love of reading, and an enthusiasm for all kinds of Literature.

In year 7 pupils are taught in mixed ability classes, and have six hours of English over the two week timetable. Year 8 and 9 are taught in four sets. Sets A and B also have six hours of English over the two weeks; sets B and C have seven. Key Stage Three Programmes of Study. One unit is studied each half term, and students are assessed half-termly.

Year 7

  • Autobiography- always in the first half term.
  • Media: advertising.
  • Shakespeare: his life and times; Elizabethan Theatre; short extracts from plays, including ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’.
  • The novel ‘Skellig’ by David Almond.
  • Poetry- including animal poetry.
  • Myths and Legends.

Year 8

  • Travel Writing.
  • The novel ‘Holes’ by Louis Sachar.
  • Charles Dickens: his life and times; extracts from novels, including Nicholas Nickleby and Oliver Twist.
  • Poetry: Narrative or World War 1 Poetry.
  • Drama
  • Media- newspapers.
  • Year 9 

  • The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’ by John Boyne or ‘Stone Cold’ by Robert Swindells or ‘Across the Barricades’ by Joan Lingard.
  • Gothic Literature.
  • Pre 1914 prose- Jane Eyre or The Hound of the Baskervilles
  • Media- GCSE preparation.
  • Drama- Shakespeare GCSE preparation.
  • Poetry- GCSE preparation.
  • Key Stage Four Programme of Study

    The current Year 11 are studying the AQA A Specification in English Language and English Literature.  They have completed their coursework, and will sit their final exams in the summer, 2011.

    The current year 10 have begun the new AQA specification, and are studying English Language and English Literature. They will write Controlled Assessments during the next two years, and will sit their final exams in summer 2012.
