The English Department aims to enable students to communicate clearly and accurately, both verbally and in writing.  We wish to encourage a love of reading, and an enthusiasm for all kinds of Literature.

In year 7 pupils are taught in mixed ability classes, year 8 are taught in four sets, and from year 9 through to year 11 there are five groups. The programme of study at KS3 is as follows:

Year 7

  • Introduction to Shakespeare

Year 8

Year 9

Key Stage Four Programme of Study

At KS4 students are taught in ability groups, and follow the AQA syllabus.  By the end of Year 11 they will achieve GCSEs in English Language and Literature.  For the very small number of students who cannot access the GCSE course we provide an alternative qualification, the Entry Level Certificate in English.
