Art

Year  7

Study around the formal elements; line; tone; texture; colour; shape, form.  Processes include drawing with a range of media, clay modelling, collage, painting, designing.

  • Investigating tones and using them to represent 3D forms.
  • Clay modelling.
  • Investigating and applying textures
  • Composition skills
  • Painting skills

 

In Year  8 and 9, the curriculum is more theme-based, whilst continuing to look at materials and techniques.  Pupils have some freedom to select materials appropriate to their idea. 

Year 8 themes include:

  • Portrait
  • Architecture (slab-build clay work.)
  • Painting techniques on a theme, e.g. ‘Storm at Sea’.
  • Styles of Realism, e.g. in landscape.
  • Topical Poster
  • Year 9 themes include:
  • Contemporary life and personal concerns (coil-build pots).
  • Composition and painting, e.g. ‘Environment’, ‘Fashionable’.
  • Drawing from observation.
  • Surrealism
  • Picasso and Cubism

Throughout the key stage, there is also the study of artists and art styles appropriate to the particular topics. 

Key Stage 4

Currently, the Art Department is offering the latest BTEC Level 2 Certificate in Art and Design.  The course offers a broad range of study in Art and Design, building on the lower school experience.  Students have the opportunity to further develop skills in a variety of media, research the work of artists and art movements, and work to real-life scenarios.  Units of Study include Visual Arts Briefs and Photography Briefs.
