Holocaust Memorial Day
Holocaust Memorial Day is marked each year on 27th January – the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration and death camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau. On and around this day, schools, communities and faith groups across the UK join together in national and local event to commemorate those people who became victims of the Nazis and their collaborators and of more recent genocides, and to consider the contemporary relevance of the Holocaust.
We commemorated Holocaust Memorial Day 2016 by taking part in a variety of activities in the School Chapel and in lessons, such as RE and History. Students were offered the opportunity to learn about the life stories of British Heroes who had taken action to help victims of the Holocaust. Holy Family High School were also one of 400 schools that took part in the first ever live webcast broadcast organised by the Holocaust Education Trust from London. This meant that they had the opportunity to hear the testimony and life story of Rudi Oppenheimer – a Holocaust survivor.
In order to reflect in more depth about the lessons learnt from the Holocaust we will be hosting an exhibition from the University of Leeds, which was launched at the UK National Holocaust Centre, The Cape Town Holocaust Centre and Leeds Town Hall on the 27th January 2015. It has been seen by approximately 30,000 people in the UK and South Africa, and has toured museums, libraries, galleries, universities and schools in the UK, South Africa, Ireland and the United States.
The exhibition with be in school from Tuesday 2nd February until Friday 5th February. Students will have the opportunity to visit the exhibition and reflect on its meaning in Religious Education lessons throughout the week.
On Friday 5th February we will focus our Liturgy on the theme of Reconciliation to reflect on one of the key themes of the exhibition. Mass will take place at 12.25 in the School Chapel and afterwards there will be the opportunity for parents/carers to visit the exhibition.
