Welcome to the Holy Family School

To Increase in wisdom and grace

Supportive and caring

Welcome

Welcome, I am delighted to be writing to you as the newly appointed Acting Head teacher of Holy Family Catholic High School. It is a privilege to take up this position after serving the school for three years as the Deputy Head teacher. Mr Michael Fallon has been appointed as Acting Deputy Head teacher and he joins us from St John Fisher in Dewsbury.

This is an exciting time to take on such a role, as I strongly believe that Holy Family continues to be a truly excellent school. Our pastoral care is regarded as exemplary and once again this summer our academic achievements have continued to go from strength to strength. Holy Family is a place where staff are proud to work, a place which Governors and parents are proud to support and a school to which students are proud to belong.

Holy Family Catholic High School, is a school with a distinct ethos centred upon the life and teaching of Jesus Christ. The dignity of each person is at the heart of Catholic teaching; every student has his or her own individual strengths, gifts and talents; our aim is to ensure that these are all developed to their full potential.

We look for excellence in all aspects of learning and we expect high standards of achievement from all members of the community. We lead and innovate to make learning fun, challenging and distinctive. The relationships between teachers, students and parents are fundamental to the success of the school. Working together, we ensure that students enjoy their time at Holy Family, make outstanding progress and leave us as responsible, well-qualified, mature young people; ready to make a valued contribution to society.

We are looking to present a window into the life of the school, an opportunity to share information and to celebrate our students and their successes and as such I hope that you find the content of our website useful.

Our Open Evening is on Thu 24th September from 6pm onwards and if you are a prospective parent, we would like to invite you to visit our school on that evening. We do feel that our pupils are our real strength and if you would like to witness a working day at Holy Family please contact Mrs J Lemm who will be happy to arrange this for you.

I would like to thank you for your interest in our school and I look forward to the possibility of working together in the future.

Sky Sports Living for Sport Athlete Mentor Visit

GREAT BRITAIN VOLLEYBALL STAR

BEN PIPES

report by Nikolina Bajaka

On the 12th November 2015 a famous Volleyball player, Ben Pipes came to Carlton Holy Family. He came to tell us about his sporting achievements and his life.

Ben played volleyball for Great Britain for over 7 years!. He played lots of matches in different countries and in every country he stayed for quite a few months, so he had to learn a lot of new languages. The countries included Spain, Sweden, Poland and probably a lot more. Ben won over 20 medals, lots of Silver and one very special Gold medal. You would probably like to know how I know all these things about him. We know this because we had a chance to interview him throughout the day. It was an amazing experience. A chance of a life time!

At the beginning of the day our PE Teacher, Mrs Hunt, invited us, the Sky Sports Living for Sport team, to a special assembly along with pupils from KS4. Ben was able to share a lot of information about his life. He told us about his volleyball skills and what it meant to him to play for his country.

During the day the Sky Sports group played lots of different games with him. All of the games were connected with the six keys to success. These are designed to help young people develop valuable like skills that will help them in and outside of school, now and in the future. Number one was mental toughness, number two, hunger to achieve, three, people skills, four, sports and life knowledge, five was breaking the barriers and the final one was planning for success.

After the practical sessions we had time to ask him some questions.

Why be a Mentor?

“Well I really enjoy working with children and telling them about different sports, but I don’t really like talking about myself. This is my second year as an athlete mentor for the Youth Sport Trust.

How old were you when you started to play volleyball?

“I was 14. When I was 17 I played in a real big match, the World Championships for England. It was a very hard challenge, but we worked as a team and now some of those people are my good friends. At 25 years old I represented GB in the Olympics.

Have you played any other sports?

“When I was younger I played everything, but running for long distances was my first sport. I was also a high jumper, but volleyball became more important to me. One of my favourite sports now is handball, I first say it played in Spain and now I play if for fun.

What is the coolest thing you have ever done?

“The coolest thing I have every done is when I went to Poland for a tournament and I had to sign a baby.

Ben has had lots of adventures in his life, some good and some not so good, but believes sometimes you need to lose if you want to win.

During the day nearly all students in our school got his autograph with his picture. I think we all had a really good time with Athlete BEN PIPES.
