Headteacher’s Blog

This has been a busy few weeks as we approach the end of the Autumn term.

Our Year 11 students have recently completed their mock examinations, and this sees the tipping point in the year for us. From now onwards the school is very focused on preparing our students for the final examination sessions in January and the summer. It may seem like a long way to go, but it will slip by all too quickly. I know that many parents will have been receiving phone calls and emails from teachers to engage your support in concentrating the minds of your sons and daughters on a deadline or piece of Controlled Assessment. The influence of parents is absolutely crucial in creating the conditions for success and although the Year 11 Parents Evening has passed a few weeks ago I would encourage you to contact the school and individual teachers if you have any questions or would like advice. We believe that the current Year 11 have significant potential, and I know that we will work together to enable the students to achieve the grades that they are capable of.

We have also enjoyed significant sporting success over the past few weeks. This includes cross country, rugby and girls football. All students receive strong support from staff in relation to these activities, with this support being supplemented by an excellent team of sports leaders and ambassadors, who set an outstanding example to the younger students. The school is also an active members of the Sky Sports Living for Sport project and we recently were fortunate to have Paul Broadbent, an international Rugby League player working with the students for a day. It was fascinating to listen to his story, and how he made the most of his ability in order to reach the level that he did. The students report that they found these sessions particularly inspirational and a group of them, now meet on a regular basis to consider the six keys for success that Paul shared with us.

As I write this, I am waiting for the school Carol Concert at 7:00 this evening. This, along with the two Liturgies that we have enjoyed today enables me to reflect on the activities that have taken place in school during Advent. The Year 10 and 11 Genesis groups, along with the Year 10 SVP group have been incredibly pro-active in providing service to the local community and raising funds to purchase mother and baby survival packs for people less fortunate than ourselves, therefore supporting the global community. These activities have been accompanied by Advent services in the Chapel on a Friday lunchtime organised by the Year 11 Genesis group and the Year 7 Service of Light at St Mary’sCarlton. All of these events have been supported by staff, and I am grateful for this, but I would like to particularly highlight the effort, dedication and skills of the students have demonstrated great commitment to these activities whether, they are singing in the choir, reading a passage, acting a piece of drama or serving food and drink to a senior citizen. As always, I am incredibly proud of the way that the young people at Holy Family conduct themselves.

We have many activities to look forward to in the New Year, but I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support and to wish you an enjoyable and peaceful Christmas.

Olly Murs Dancers- Dance & Gym evening

I had the opportunity to be involved with many things in this school. One of my fondest memories was the dance and gym evening. I was involved in a dance with 9 people, 8 girls and one boy. Two of the most talented dancers named Beth and Emily choreographed our routine to a song called ‘Dance with me tonight’ by Olly Murs. We practised vigorously for weeks, and put all our effort in to our dancing. The dancers involved were myself, Holly, Lily, Grace, Amber, Ellie and Daniel. We danced at the dance and gym evening and it was a huge success. Then one day in assembly we got some fantastic news. We were asked to stay behind after assembly with two other groups. We had been chosen to compete in a dance competition against Brayton high school. We asked Beth and Emily to dance in the group so they got the recognition they deserved. We had a lot of fun whilst there, but unfortunately Brayton took the top prize, and another of our groups came away with second place. Our group got third place. We were happy with this because we knew we had done our very best. At the sports dinner, we all got badges for dance and I won the year seven dance award. I have gained new friends because of this experience and many people from my class have decided to take part in this years dance and gym evening. We have already set up a dance group and we are looking forward to rehearsing and choreographing our dance to another Olly Murs song named ‘Troublemaker’. We are all excited to see what this year brings.

Holy Family Cross Country Team

After preparing and flushing the butterflies out of their stomachs, the ready cross country team strolled across the muddy fields ready to win. Staring at the long course and the other school teams, a lump built in their throats but as they lined up, they filled up with energy and sprinted round the course dominating the field, passing the other schools with pride, knowing they’d done a fantastic job and made the school proud. Mud flicking up onto their legs, and cold sweat patting their brows, Holy Family still had a perfect photo finish making it to the next round of running for the school. It was a great achievement and an enjoyable time that won’t be forgotten- even with the gruelling task of going up steep hills. TheCarltonteam did the best they could and showed other schools that size matters not, legs burning and sweat pouring, they still went on to be the greatest achievers there. Afterwards, the Holy Family School Cross Country Running team rode home and were filled with excitement and joy, knowing that they had doneCarltonproud. We owe Miss Hunt for a great day and ourselves for being the best we could.

Paul Broadbent visits HFS

Paul Broadbent is a real star of Rugby League. In a career spanning 17 years, prop forward Paul representedEnglandandGreat Britain, playing over 450 first grade games for teams including Sheffield Eagles,Halifax,HullandWakefield. He visitedCarltonHolyFamilyHigh schoolas part of his mentoring role with the Sky Sports Living For Sport project.

Paul delivered an inspirational assembly to the whole school about how he overcame personal struggles to get to where he is today.

He worked with various groups throughout the day, some of his sessions were rugby based games whilst other sessions were classroom based where he explained the six keys to success which is the Sky Sports Living For Sport mantra.

The six keys to success are:

Mental toughness

Hunger to achieve

People skills

Sports and life knowledge

Breaking barriers

Planning for success

The six keys to success are designed to help young people develop valuable life skills that will help them in and outside of school, now and into the future.

As a result of Paul’s visit students now meet every Thursday lunch time to enjoy various sports as well as continuing to learn and develop the 6 keys to success. In January the will receive another athlete mentor from Sky Sports. Last Year the students enjoyed several visits by Jenna Downing, the worlds No1 women’s extreme skater, in which she encouraged the students to get involved with roller blading.

Miss Howard said “This is a fantastic opportunity from Sky, it takes 5 minutes to register a project and you can choose any theme you want, it could be to promote self esteem, develop gifted and talented students and work across the curriculum, once you’ve registered you are then sent free T-Shirts and a date with an athlete mentor. The students have thrived in their projects and the athlete mentors have been an inspiration to staff as well as students”

Enterprise Day at John Leggot College

Student Enterprise Day At John-Leggot College Is A Success

A Group of year 9 students went on a enterprise day at John Leggot. It was a complete success many of them even got ideas about where they want to further their education after High School. The students involved were Rebecca Shipley , Barbara Szalecka , Jasmine Johnson , Timmy Heaton , Matty Whisker and Charlie Peck , their enterprise idea was to create a healthy fair-trade drink they haggled for a cheap price on lemons and yoghurt and also choose a split glass bottle they called it ‘swirl’ and made sure all the products used were completely fair-trade. This was a wise decision and impressed the judges , although they didn’t win they put 110% into creating the drink.

Genesis Group

The Genesis Group primarily consists of a number of Year 11 students who work together to promote and share Christian values within the school community, within the local community and within our wider global community also.

The group was first established at Cardinal Langley RC High School in Middleton and has since been developed in four other schools. The group is formed with Gospel values very much at its core; its aim is to make these values real and self-evident within the context of our school.

Our first school group, formed in 2011, was a major success and has had a huge impact on many aspects of school life. Since then, the group has continued to grow, with new members forming the Year 10 branch, dedicated to working for the SVP charity.

Within our own school we work to promote and enrich prayer life, assisting with and leading assemblies, collective worship and form time reflections. Similarly, great work has been done on important issues, including lots of opportunities created in the recent National Anti-Bullying week.

The Genesis Group also works hard to fundraise for many charities and raise awareness of the plight of others. Our focus charity, Cafod enables the group to see closely the need for sustainable support for LEDC countries and the problems emerging as a result of climate change and global warming, whilst playing an active part in the fight for justice and mercy.

At a local level the group visits and works with primary students, helps to prepare Family Masses in our parishes. The group regularly visits the elderly and infirm in the hope of spreading a little cheer and good will. Pilgrimages are also a key part of our group’s activities, with an early visit to Walsingham at the beginning of the year, followed by a cumulative visit to Rome after the exams in Year 11.
